| Behavioural Safety
Workshops |
How can we do even
better when safety is already good? We must find ways to go beyond
the regular and excellent technical training. Somehow we have to
change behaviours to make people hyperaware, hyperfocussed and
hypercourageous.
Profit Improvers has delivered behavioural safety
workshops to oil and gas companies since 1995 (see testimonials
below).
We've found that people KNOW WHAT THEY HAVE TO
DO, but they sometimes don't do it. Why? There are three main reasons:
- Fear - about looking stupid, being regarded as a shirker,
losing one's job, and being regarded as a wimp or incompetent.
Unless we get people to admit these fears we can't make progress.
- Lack of hyperawareness and concentration.
- Lack of communication skills for safety.
This following 4-hour programme (onshore or offshore)
tackles these three issues. There is no lecturing - no slides and
no theory! Extensive and detailed discussion about what is really
affecting people helps them reveal why they still occasionally
work unsafely and generates the courage to act. Workshops include
different "ranks" and disciplines to ensure people get
to hear the views and difficulties of others in behaving safely.
The timetable is flexible and can be split to
suit the installation's operational needs.

| Testimonials |
Bill,
Thank you for delivering the behavioural safety workshops for the Britannia drill
crews, Britannia and KCA Deutag, and for our Operations, Maintenance and Facilities
teams on Britannia. The feedback was all very positive and we're looking forward
to reaping the rewards in the form of improved safety performance.
Charlie Ross, SEQA Co-ordinator, Britannia Operator Ltd |
Dear Bill,
Thank you for Profit Improvers recent delivery of the behavioural safety workshops
to our teams and for your support and assistance in Cape's continued drive
for safety excellence. The three offshore locations and four terminals
have benefited from the workshops and we will further utilise your services.
Your timely and tailored response to our specific needs have been invaluable.
Colin Sutherland, Business Delivery
Manager, Cape Industrial Services Ltd |
Dear Bill,
Thank you for
delivering the Advanced Safety Workshops to just over 500
personnel on our drilling
sites and with senior colleagues on the beach. The feedback
from all was good with 96% of participants rating the workshops "very
worthwhile" or "worthwhile". We have seen a
marked change in behaviours, albeit that it has taken a year
to achieve. Your input has been a contributor to our success
in this area.
R. D. Miller, Drilling Manager,
Talisman Energy UK Ltd |
Bill,
The advanced safety and communication
skills workshop for Amerada Hess and our contractors was very
well received. The interactive nature of the event got people
involved. The idea of the pre-workshop exercise helped people
to focus on just why we do things we know we shouldn't with
regards to safety.
Andy Child, Well Operations Manager,
Amerada Hess. |
Dear Bill,
The advanced safety workshops
you facilitated for our drill crews were some of the most successful
we have ever run. This was no easy assignment with half of
our people unfortunately facing redundancy. Your non-consultant
style and genuine concern helped to get very sceptical people
involved and the feedback was excellent. Even better, our client
was impressed with our improved safety approach and, I believe,
has hired you to do similar work for them.
Mark Burns, Operations Manager,
Noble Drilling (Platforms) |
Bill,
Thank you for your contribution to
improved safety in the Greater Forties Field. The 38 Advanced
Safety workshops you conducted offshore on our seven platforms
were well received with 70% of the 468 participants rating them as very
worthwhile or worthwhile. Your straightforward, non-lecturing approach
overcame much of the scepticism often associated with "yet another
safety workshop". Your flexibility in making the workshops fit platform
operations was greatly appreciated. Thank you also for your recommendations,
several of which have already been applied.
John Watson, Greater Forties Offshore
Team Leader, BP Amoco |
To Whom it may concern,
Together with our safety department, Bill Robb helped Stena Drilling prepare
and facilitate a series of six workshops for our offshore workforce. The objectives
of these events were to improve the basic understanding of safety and encourage
greater participation by all personnel in safety activities. These workshops
were enthusiastically received by all attendees due in no small part to Bill's
ability to keep the interest level high. A year on we are reaping the benefits
of a greatly improved safety record.
I Cowieson, Operations Manager, Stena Drilling |
Bill,
Your short Advanced Safety Workshops have been a great success and enjoyed
by the crews of the Noble Ton van Langeveldt. Although your workshops were
only a small part of our overall safety training and improvement plan we
can still see the benefits in the way people communicate about safety.
Many Thanks
Tommy Saliba, Drilling Superintendent,
Noble Drilling (TvL) |
Dear Bill,
Thank you for your presentations
which were very well received by all levels of participants.
The unique approach to enhancing supervisory skills was received
very positively as can be judged from the close out evaluations.
Your method of interfacing earlier prepared surveys from the
supervisors assisted us to provide further tools for the staff
in combating incidents at the worksite. The course will compliment
the Safety Leadership Workshops that we are holding with all
Supervisors this year.
Richard Curtis, Safety/ OA Manager,
Diamond Offshore (UK) Ltd |
Bill,
Noble is very pleased with the work you did for us in enhancing the communication
skills of our personnel and improving their safety behaviour. Not only
do we notice this in the day-to-day acting of our rig managers and drilling
superintendents, as a result of your input on the rig manager meetings,
but also it did greatly assist with the turnaround in our Norwegian operations.
The Noble Al White has greatly
benefited from your input. Our client has recently stated that
they are the safest and most efficient team (they have 5 other
rigs under contract), which is backed up by statistics. We
did follow-up after your 6 workshops and most of the crew did
reported significant improvements, which were mirrored by the
operational and safety performance statistics.
Cees van Diemen, Operations Manager
(Mobile Rigs Europe) Noble Drilling |
Dear Bill,
The four Advanced Safety Workshops you did for our drilling crews went down
very well. The feedback shows that people have recognised the need to think
even more every time they do something - especially with monotonous and
routine tasks. It was helpful to get people's direct suggestions for enhancing
safety even more and your style helped to get discussion going. We are
acting on and monitoring progress on many of these suggestions.
Tony Meader, Drilling Superintendent,
BP Wytch Farm |
Bill,
We have had some good feedback from the eight Advanced Safety Workshops you
did on our behalf with the Smedvig crews on the West Navion. This was an
extensive programme with 106 participants over 9 sessions. Thanks for your
flexibility in working with this schedule over the last month.
Rick Mason, Drilling Superintendent
- Deepwater, Conoco |
Bill,
The feedback from rig personnel indicates that the Advanced Safety Workshops
went down very well. They highlight and reinforce the need to think, about
your own and other's safety, and not rely wholly on the umbrella of "the
safety management system". Shutting down operations to run some of
the workshops, let people know how serious ourselves and the clients are
about avoiding people getting hurt. To date, it seems to have got the message
across.
Allan Grindlay, Rig Manager, Borgny
Dolphin, Dolphin Drilling |
Bill,
Your advanced safety workshops went down well with the crews. Of the 74 participants
99% rated them as very worthwhile or worthwhile. While people were working
safely before, I am pleased to say that we are seeing an even safer attitude.
I know that the Bredford and Borgny will also be calling on you.
Magnus Harcus , Rig Manager, Borgsten Dolphin, Dolphin Drilling |
