S5: Designing, scripting and production of safety DVDs and other materials
We need a range of resources and visual aids to help us get the safety message across. However, if we don’t think through carefully what we want the aids to achieve, these resources could end up being ineffective.
When writing or preparing the materials it’s best to use an education – not a technical – hat. By doing this you avoid many mistakes. For example, often:
- Manuals are way too long and not clearly expressed. Sometimes you can reduce 20 pages to 12 without any loss of understanding.
- DVDs are very artistic and have good graphics and music but he main messages is lost in all the words and graphics.
- We or computer based training treats people like children requiring them to answer simple questions and “click” too much.
- Leaflets give lots of information but this is often presented ia confusing manner and there isn’t enough “selling” – that is motivational writing.
It would be a privilege to work with your team from the start to ensure the resources you are planning REALLY are effective – and hopefully cost-effectively.
If you already have a range of resources let’s have a look and make some initial suggestions for re-editing – and we’re happy to do this free of charge with no obligation whatsoever.
